ACUPUNCTURE

What is it and What is involved?

Acupuncture is derived from traditional chinese medicine and has been providing benefits for over 2000 years. It is based on restoring balance within the body to alleviate pain and illness.

Western Medical Acupuncture is used in mainstream healthcare including the NHS as a technique to aid relief from pain and injuries.

The technique involves inserting fine needles into the skin and muscles to stimulate sensory nerves within the body which is likely to cause the  release of hormones which aid pain relief such as endorphins as well as healing responses within the body.

It is used for many health conditions and injuries such as:

*chronic pain: neck/lower back pain

*tension headaches

*tendonitis/tendinopathies

*arthritis

*post-operative pain

and many other joint pains.

The evidence for the use of acupuncture is very mixed however if used in conjunction with other treatment techniques there have been many long lasting effects.

There are no safety regulations for acupuncture in the UK however it is recommended that acupuncture be carried out by a trained professional such as a physiotherapist, doctor or nurse. If in doubt The British Acupuncture Council register practitioners who have been approved by the professional standards authority.
